A Murano glass furnace

A Murano glass furnace

The photographs in this gallery are a homage to the thousand-year-old artisan and artistic production of glass on Murano, an island in the Venetian lagoon. Today this production is in danger of going out of business due to foreign competition, especially from the Chinese. Many companies have closed and the number of people involved in glassmaking has fallen drastically. The photographs were taken in the artisan factory of Carlo Moretti, one of the few surviving firms famed worldwide for its use of technical traditions in an innovative, creative approach. The special processing of the images aims to highlight the exceptional nature of the situation, which cannot be conveyed by the usual hackneyed pictures.
